In this episode, Scott Smith explores one of the most common frustrations in founder-led businesses: leaders say they want people to take ownership, but then step back in the moment decisions are made differently than they would have made them. Over time, the team learns that responsibility may be assigned, but real control still belongs to the founder.

For founders and executives, this is a critical leadership discipline. Delegation without authority is not ownership. Asking someone to use judgment while requiring them to imitate your judgment is a test they cannot pass. People develop leadership capacity by making decisions, experiencing consequences, receiving feedback, and trying again.

Scott explains that releasing control does not mean lowering standards or abandoning accountability. It means making outcomes, values, risks, authority, boundaries, and escalation points clear. Leaders must distinguish between true standards and personal preferences. Standards protect quality and values. Preferences often protect comfort.
